Born on February 27, 1944, in Ohio, he was the son of Bernard and Grace Martin. Melvin graduated from Baldwin Park High School in 1962 and soon after enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country for two years.
Following his military service, Melvin attended Citrus College, where he earned his Associate’s degree in Office Management and Supervision. He later retired from CONRAC Systems after a dedicated career in Purchasing.
On June 9, 1973, Melvin married the love of his life, Eva Darlene Reider, and together they built a life grounded in family. Mel was a man who valued simple joys, time with loved ones, a good conversation, and the comfort of home, shared in later years with his famously ornery cat, BW.
He was the rides to and from school for many years for Jackson and Emma.
He is survived by his son, Rob (Lisa) Hawkins; his son‑in‑law, Andrew Smith (Lori); and his grandchildren, William Case, Jeremy (Ashley) Melvin Hawkins, Brett (Frankie) Hawkins, Taylor Hawkins, Jackson Smith, and Emma Smith. He also leaves behind his great‑grandchildren, Eden Hawkins, Emmie Case, Auri Hawkins, and Malakai Doten, each brought him immense pride and joy.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Darlene, and his beautiful daughter Lori.
He will be remembered for giving the best birthday cards ever!!
A private family service will take place at Oakdale Cemetery on Monday May 4th at 1pm
Thank you
