She became a Christian at an early age and devoted her life to serving God through her love of music. She was a member of the Shelton Trio, also composed of her brother, Rev. Melvin Shelton, Jr., and his wife Hazel who began singing on WGRV in the 1960’s. After this the trio traveled and sang in churches in the Southeast for many years. As long as her health permitted, she attended Horse Creek Church of God where she sang in the choir and in another trio with her daughter Phyllis and special friend, Chris O’Dell. A talented musician, she also played the bass guitar for the church music. Singing was such an important part of her entire life. Even after suffering two major strokes, she never forgot the lyrics to the songs that she had sung through the years and delighted her visitors at Laughlin Healthcare Center by singing some of these songs to them.
Evelyn was known for her sewing expertise and worked as a seamstress for many years at Greene Manufacturing. After her retirement she enjoyed crocheting and knitting sweaters and afghans for herself and family members.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, knew that “Nan” always had a warm hug and a loving smile for them.
