

Harry Charles Nelson, Jr., 94, passed away Wednesday, July 15 at Takoma Regional Hospital surrounded by loving family. He now rests in Jesus, awaiting the call of the Lifegiver at the glorious second coming of our Lord and Savior.
Charles led a full and vibrant life. After obtaining an MD degree from Loma Linda University in 1944, he pursued a professional career as a general surgeon, primarily in Florida. He served his country in WWII as well as in the Korean War as a flight surgeon. As a life-long Seventh-day Adventist, he filled many volunteer capacities in the different congregations of which he was a member. For many years he sought to better his community and world as an officer in Sertoma Club International. He motivated many and moved mountains to bring his vision for a better future into being. He was and ever will be an inspiration to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Lorraine Sommerville Nelson; two sons: Harry Nelson and Ron Nelson, along with their wives Lynda Kostenko Nelson and Debbie Myers Nelson; his daughter, Lou Ann Nelson and her fiancé Brian Cox; two grandchildren, Eric Nelson and his wife Rachel Nelson, Kristina Nelson Hall and her husband Tyson Hall; as well as four great-grandchildren.
Special recognition and thanks go to two exceptional caregivers, Steve Caine and Chuck Reese, as well as to the physicians and staff at Takoma Regional Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at the Greeneville Seventh-day Adventist church on August 6 at 7:00 pm preceded by visitation. Interment will be the following day at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Maranatha Volunteers International, www.maranatha.org, or the local Community Service Center, 710 Asheville Hwy, Greeneville.
