March 21, 1942 – June 5, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Margaret Hansen (née Simpson) on June 5, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born in Stratford, Ontario, on March 21, 1942, Liz lived a life marked by kindness, creativity, dedication, and a deep love for family, friends and community.
Liz was a devoted educator who inspired generations of students throughout her teaching career in Guelph. She taught at Tytler Public School and Ottawa Crescent Public School, where her patience, warmth, and commitment to learning left a lasting impact on countless children and families. Following her retirement from the classroom, she continued to support learners as a tutor with Action Read.
Family was at the heart of Liz's life. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Lisa Hooey (Hansen) (Gerry Sanders), Steven Hansen, and Julie Gillam (Hansen) (Joe). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Katie, Eli, Ben, and Mia, and a delighted great-grandmother to Hunter, who brought her immense joy. She is also fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Shawna Hillborn (Jamie), Todd Simpson (Micki), Kirk Simpson (Tammy), and Scott Simpson (Michelle), along with their families.
Liz was predeceased by her beloved husband, Niels Hansen, and her brother, Jim Simpson.
Outside of her professional life, Liz embraced many passions. She was an avid bridge player, an enthusiastic reader, and a talented painter. Her creativity found expression through her artwork, and she enjoyed sharing her love of the arts as a member of the Guelph Arts Society. A committed vegan and passionate advocate for animal rights, Liz lived her values every day with compassion and conviction. Whether gathered around a bridge table, immersed in a good book, or creating a new painting, Liz approached life with curiosity, enthusiasm, and grace.
Liz will be remembered for her gentle spirit, quick wit, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She leaves behind a legacy of learning, creativity, friendship, and family that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
