Today, we announce the passing of John Errol FitzGibbon, who died peacefully on April 12, 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by his family: his wife, Cheryl FitzGibbon, children Erin FitzGibbon and John Robert FitzGibbon, and his grandchildren Barrett, Kai, and Hobey FitzGibbon-Ockenden.
He is predeceased by his parents, Errol and Arleen FitzGibbon, his sister, Ruth Gladstone, and his brother, James FitzGibbon. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law, Linda FitzGibbon, Vickie Derouville, and Marie Mann, his brothers-in-law, Bill and Rob Mann, daughter-in-law Allison Fairbairn, as well as by many nieces and nephews.
John was a passionate man; he dedicated his life to his family, research, and education. For 42 years, he was a pillar of the University of Guelph, where he served as a professor and as the Chair of the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development. Throughout his career, John made countless connections with students, colleagues, and members of the agricultural community both in Canada and abroad. Despite his terrible handwriting, he published numerous papers with both colleagues and students. Even after his retirement, John continued to support and mentor students in their learning. Selflessly, seeing them through their doctoral defences.
John was active in the community, volunteering with Guelph Minor Hockey and organizing the Power Play tournament for many years. In later years, he supported his grandchildren, almost never missing a game, and was always quick to slip them a few dollars afterwards for treats. A passionate lover of the outdoors, John made sure his family accompanied him on numerous trips throughout Canada. Learning about nature and adventure were always a priority for John. His legacy will carry on in his children, grandchildren, and others in so many intangible ways. Who knows how his influence on young minds will shape the future?
A celebration of life for John will be held on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, 1099 Gordon St., Guelph.
[In lieu of flowers,] Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of John.
