It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kristina Elaine Fitton (née Eriksrud), on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the age of 86, in the comfort of her home in Cambridge, Ontario. After spending her final hours surrounded by family, Kristina passed peacefully with her beloved husband, of 47 years David Fitton, by her side.
Kristina was born in Durban, Manitoba, on July 5, 1940. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was defined by love, kindness, and an extraordinary capacity to care for others. She possessed a rare and beautiful gift: the ability to make people feel heard, understood, accepted, and deeply loved. If you needed a listening ear, a compassionate heart, or someone to turn to when life felt overwhelming, Kris was always there. She gave of herself so freely, offering comfort without judgment, kindness without expectation, and love without conditions. Her heart had room for so many, and she had a way of making each person feel that they mattered.
Kristina's love was not simply something she expressed in words; it was something she lived every day. It could be found in her willingness to listen, her gentle compassion, and the countless ways she cared for those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love that cannot be measured, for the kindness she shared became a part of the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. The world was a gentler place because she was in it.
Throughout her life, Kristina found joy in drawing, singing harmony at church, and caring for others throughout her nursing career. She worked at Guelph General Hospital from 1975 to 1993, where she was an exceptional emergency room nurse. Those fortunate enough to have Kris care for them received more than outstanding nursing care; they were met with compassion, reassurance, and the comforting presence of someone who genuinely cared. In moments that could be frightening and uncertain, she brought skill, calmness, and humanity to her work. Nursing was more than a profession; it was a natural extension of the caring heart she carried throughout her life.
Kristina, Dave, and Nadine moved to British Columbia in 1993 to be closer to Kristina’s parents and sisters. She continued her nursing career at Peace Portal Lodge in Surrey BC until their return in 2004 to Cambridge, Ontario, where Kristina was reunited with her children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Above all, Kristina cherished her family. David, whose love and care for her especially over the last several years were a beautiful reflection of the bond they shared. He rarely left her side, caring for her with tenderness, patience, and unwavering devotion. Their life together was built on love, commitment, and the quiet strength of standing by one another through life's many seasons.
Kristina will be lovingly remembered by her children: Rick Howat (Vanessa), Bradley Howat, Carolyn Hutchinson (Steve), and Nadine Fitton (Tony); and her cherished grandchildren, Cody, Scotty (Mackenzie), Brady, Ileana (Max), Daniel, Kasady, Makena, Kai'noa, Morgana, and Timothy Jr and great grandchildren: Vincent and Miabella. She also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
She was predeceased by her parents, Haakon and Helen Eriksrud, and her sisters, Karen Oram and Eunice Bernacki.
Although our hearts are heavy with grief at Kristina’s passing, we find comfort in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. We rejoice in knowing that she has been welcomed into the loving arms of her Saviour, where she is now at peace and reunited with the beloved family members who have gone before her. Though we will deeply miss her here on earth, we take comfort in God’s promises and trust that Kristina is now resting in His eternal love, free from all pain and sorrow, in the glory of His heavenly kingdom.
While we will miss her gentle presence, her listening ear, her loving heart, and the countless ways she made life better for those around her, the love she gave us will never leave us. It will live on in the stories we tell, the kindness we extend to others, the compassion we show, and the love we share with one another. In this way, a part of Kris will always remain with us.
Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind a legacy. Kristina leaves behind both, along with the immeasurable gift of having been loved by her. Her life reminds us that the greatest legacy we can leave is not what we possess, but the love we give and the lives we touch along the way.
Family and friends are warmly invited to gather to celebrate Kristina's life, share cherished memories, and find comfort in the love she leaves behind.
