Peter Derrick Zwart passed away on October 17, 2026, at the age of 60, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 16, 1966, in Picton to Andries and Saakje Zwart, Pete grew up with a love for farm life and a natural talent for working on cars.
Driven by a sharp mind and endless curiosity, he initially trained to be a mechanic before returning to school to pursue science. He earned his Master’s Degree in Soil Science in 1995 and spent his career in agricultural research, most recently at the University of Guelph.
Pete received a double lung transplant in 1994, gifting him an additional 32.5 years of life. Throughout those years, he often worried about having children and leaving them too soon. Though his sons are now young men in their twenties, his passing is still far too soon for everyone who loved him. Pete was married for 27 years to Heather, the mother of his children, and though they separated three years ago, they remained bound by deep history and a shared pride in their family. He will be remembered forever for his quick sense of humour, his gift for storytelling, his passion for Saab cars, and his absolute devotion to his boys.
Pete is survived by his three beloved sons, Benjamin (Sumin), William, and Derrick, as well as his eight siblings: Mike (Sharon), Nina (Gord), Jake (Heather), Jeanette (Steve), Clara (Herman), Alice (Rob), Steve, and Philip (Evelyn). He is also fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends. He was predeceased by his cherished son, Joshua, and both of his parents, Andries and Saakje.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Toronto General Hospital Transplant Unit or the Guelph General Hospital Intensive Care Unit would be appreciated, as Peter received excellent care at both facilities.
There will be a private family burial on Friday. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 24 at Harcourt United Church, 87 Dean Avenue in Guelph. From 1-2:30 will be an Open House with an opportunity to mingle, express condolences, and share food. Pete loved a good potluck! From 2:30 on will be a more formal storytelling time to share memories of Pete in a structured format. All are welcome.
