Thomas Earl McCullough

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Earl McCullough on July 16, 2026, in is 66th year.

July 4, 1961 – July 16, 2026

To know Tom was to know kindness. He had a heart that welcomed everyone, a smile that could brighten the darkest day and a spirit that refused to be defined by adversity. While his life changed forever at the age of 18 after a swimming accident that left him a quadriplegic, Tom chose to live with courage rather than bitterness, gratitude rather than resentment, and hope rather than despair. His strength was quiet but unwavering and he inspired countless people simply by the way he lived each day. He wasn’t the loudest man in the room, but he often was the strongest. Not because of his body but because of his character. He saw the good in people and met everyone with compassion and showed us that true strength isn’t measured by what you can lift, but by what you can carry.

For 43 years, Tom was a cherished member of the Guelph Independent Living Program, where he built lasting friendships and touched countless lives. The staff, caregivers and friends he met there became an extension of his family. He never took their kindness for granted and never missed an opportunity to say thank you. Tom lived with deep appreciation for every act of compassion shown to him and in return he gave so much of himself.

Tom found happiness while hunting, fishing, doing karaoke, dancing, drawing, and watching movies. His happiest moments were spent on his property in Mount Forest and the beloved family cottage surrounded by the people he loved most. There was nothing more important than family and friends together. Those gatherings were filled with laughter, stories, and memories that will be treasured forever.

His nieces and nephews adore him. They will always remember his infectious sense of humor, his creative version of songs that had everyone laughing and his ability to make every child feel special. He didn’t need grand gestures to make an impact. His love was found in the conversations he shared, the encouragement he offered, the laughter he created and the genuine interest he took in every person’s life. Tom was the person you could always count on to listen without judgement, encourage without hesitation, and love without condition. He approached every challenge with grace and every person with compassion. He taught us that true strength isn’t measured by physical ability but by the size of one’s heart. He showed us that gratitude can exist even in life’s greatest hardships and that joy is something we choose to share.

He leaves behind his devoted, loving mother, Marilyn and goes to join his late father Roger (Doug)(1999)

Also joining with him, a very special Uncle Bob (2004) and his cherished nephew Tyson Lam (2013). All of whom we know welcomed him home with open arms.

Tom will be deeply missed by his loving siblings, Valorie Hebert (Rick), Steven McCullough (Caroline), and Susan Flood (Don, his best friend).

He will also be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Todd Hebert (Christa), Shannon Hebert Edinger (Dave), Deanna Hebert, Richard Hebert (Amber), Sarah Gromeder (Tim), David McCullough, Melissa Lam (Benson), Michele Lam (Ben), Trevor Flood (Erin), along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, dear friends and everyone whose lives were made better by knowing him.

The lessons Tom taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him. He showed each of us that life is not measured by the challenges we endure, but by the love we give, the kindness we show, and the memories we create together.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff and caregivers of the Guelph Independent Living Program, who’s kindness and dedication enriched Tom’s life for more than four decades as well as the many wonderful people who supported Tom throughout his life. A special thank you is also extended to Sue, Wes, Barb, Min, Terri, June and the Neeve Street family for their friendship, care, and unwavering support.

A visitation for Tom and his family will happen at the Gilbert MacIntyre Funeral Home Hart Chapel 1099 Gorden St. Guelph On. Friday July 24 2026 from 6- 9pm.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on July 26 2026, at the Raging Bull located at 84 Lewis Road, Guelph at 2pm - 6pm where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honour a man whose life was an inspiration to so many.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory may be made to the Independent Living Program or a Spinal Cord Injury organization.

Although our hearts ache with the pain of losing him we are incredibly grateful for the gift of having shared our lives with him. We will carry his lessons, his stories, his laughter and his love with us always.
