In 1951 he immigrated to Canada at the age of 23, with his younger brother John, seeking opportunities that weren't available in Holland. Andy was a skilled auto mechanic. He worked at local import auto dealerships and operated Grafton Motors in partnership with his good friend, Gerald Hayman, for many years. He took an active leadership roll with the Fifth Fairview Cub Scouts and later served as president of the Armview District Boy Scouts of Canada. He was a kind and generous man. He regularly supported many charities over his lifetime as well as being an active blood donor for decades. Andy repaired everything around his own home and property, whether he could or not, lovingly including his son and grandchildren in many of those endeavours. Throughout his marriage and retirement, he and Catherine enjoyed ballroom dancing and travelled extensively. Retirement also allowed him much time to spend with his grandchildren while also learning to become an accomplished gardener.
He was predeceased by his wife Catherine (Thorpe), as well as his siblings; Anton, Jann, John, Corrie, Annie and Bep. He is survived by his son Paul and wife Linda (Falkenham), as well as his grandsons Mitchell and Russell.
A visitation will be held Wednesday Sept 7th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. A funeral service will be held Thursday Sept. 8th at 10:00 am at the same location. A reception will follow.
