Halifax, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018 in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. She will be remembered by all as a talented artist, homemaker, and gardener; and as a woman of kindness, generosity and spirit.
Nancy was born April 5, 1927 to the late John and Mary (Russell) Cameron in Noel, Hants County. In her younger years, she was involved in local track and field winning many competitions. Her ability resulted in an offer to train and compete for entry on an Olympic team. Her sense of duty to home and family prevented her from accepting the offer.
During the Second World War, Nancy was a proud member of the CWAC serving in Halifax, N.S. She met the love of her life, Aubrey, when both were serving in the military. They married in 1946 and during Aubrey's career were posted in Nova Scotia, British Columbia and New Brunswick retiring to their roots in Nova Scotia.
She felt fortunate to travel with her veteran husband to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Holland. She was touched at the appreciation and gratitude shown the liberators and all Canadians. To mark the 55th anniversary, they were able to attend again and participate with their two sons. Both trips resulted in lasting friendships with their host families. Nancy's heart was broken in 2010 when her soulmate Aubrey passed away. Her strong spirit and love of family allowed her to continue in their family home for several more years.
Nancy's final years were happily spent at the Veterans Memorial Building in Halifax. There she made many friends with both veterans and staff. While in residence she continued to paint for her family and friends despite advanced arthritis and failing eyesight.
Nancy loved to cook, bake (especially bread and rolls), sew, quilt, knit and crochet. She would try anything once and with that spirit took up oil painting at age 54. This became a passion for her. Her paintings are displayed and treasured by family and friends in their homes, and in the hallways of the Veterans Memorial Building.
Her gardening skills were renowned, and her accomplishments were featured on local television last summer. She grew up on a farm, and with her experience and tender care, her gardens at home and later at the Veterans Memorial were always lush, with a high yield. A special thank you to V4E recreation staff Laura and Kate for their support and affection for Nancy in all her projects and interests.
She is survived by children Aubrey (Lorraine), Vincent (Judy), Barbara, Beverley (Ray) and Susan (Scott); grandchildren Ceri, Dan, Vincent, Stephen, Heather, Nicholas, Sam, Raymond John and Samantha; great grandchildren Joshua and Ada; special daughters Carmel Young and Bev Kidney; veteran friends Albert, Herb and John. She was predeceased by husband, Aubrey, sister Margaret, brothers Donald and Eion; veteran friends Anna and Jimmy.
She will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew her. The family would like to thank all staff and volunteers of V4E for their care and friendship over the years. There are too many to name but you will know who you are.
In keeping with Nancy's wishes there will be no service at this time. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jasnowfuneralhome.com. Donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Society or a Charity of choice.
