Raised in Morocco during his formative years, and returning to France in time for conscription and a return to fight in active duty in Algeria for two years, Alain never thought of himself as a “died in the wool” francais. Returning from the war, he finished his degree in Fine Arts from the Sorbonne, worked in the arts and at Club Med as a diving instructor, before emigrating to Canada in 1967.
Alain absolutely loved Canada, his adoptive country, although, since he was a born procrastinator, it took him 50 years to actually fill out the papers to become a citizen. It in no way diminished his pride in our country which he declared the best in the world.
A crazy, live for the moment, kind of guy, he none the less settled down with a more traditional woman and brought a spark of something else into her life. After moving to Halifax in the 70’s he started his own Interior Design Business and was proud to be an immigrant who was able to create jobs for other Canadians. He loved art, had his own exhibition, and purchased many works of art from others.
He was an avid squash and racquetball player, loved to sail and later to play golf (a love/hate relationship). He loved good food, enjoyed with friends in their homes and at restaurants.
Over the past few years Alain had several health issues and it was a blessing that he was able to stay in his own home and then, passed away quietly after a short hospital stay.
He is survived by his wife Linda (nee Belmare) and his brother and sister in law Rick and Jane Belmare. He will be cremated, and a private celebration of life and burial will be held at a later date.
