She is predeceased by her mother, Alma Mills, father, Leighton Mills, and her brother Kenneth Mills. She is survived by her sisters, Merion (“Merrie”) and Monica Mills, her three children, Karin, Lesley and Derek (wife Dervel) and her grandson, Kai.
She made the crossing from Trinidad to England for her B.A. years (University of Birmingham) and then back across the Atlantic to Halifax, Nova Scotia where, with further university degrees in hand (B.Ed., Mount Saint Vincent University and M.Ed., Saint Mary’s University), she spent the remainder of her years as an educator and language teacher in Spanish and French first at Saint Mary’s Universitiy and then in different Halifax schools. She became the Halifax District School Board’s first Black female principal, serving at both Ecole Beaufort and later at Grosvenor- Wentworth Park Elementary School. Ann was famous for her brilliance and wit, as well as her splendid cooking skills and generous hospitality where her macaroni and cheese or her West Indian sorrel drinks were highlights of many parties. She helped so many West Indian students studying here, mentoring them and/or taking them into her own home. For other local young people she was virtually a second mother. In other words Annabelle left a large footprint on the lives of everybody who met her.
Her family would like to thank the staff at The Sagewood Community Care for seven years of excellent service and care for Annabelle during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
Annabelle’s funeral will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 28th, 2022 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Halifax Nova Scotia with Revs. Nichola Cumine and Vivien Hannon presiding. Online condolences may be made at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
