Born on October 11, 1939, in Ottawa, Ontario, Mike was the eldest child of Arthur and Florence Tingley. He was predeceased by his parents and by Olive, his loving wife of 47 years.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Catherine of Halifax; his sons, Arthur of London, Paul and his partner, Natalie, of Halifax, and Charles and his wife, Kim; his granddaughters, Regan and Reed; and his sister, Vangie, and her husband, Al.
A graduate of the Technical University of Nova Scotia in electrical engineering, Mike worked for IBM before joining Saint Mary’s University, where he served as Head of Computer Sciences during a 28-year career. For a short time, he also operated the Mr. Donut business on Bayers Road.
Mike met Olive after putting his name on her dance card, beginning a long and loving life together. He was an accomplished athlete and a dedicated competitor, becoming an over-40 provincial tennis champion and a nine-time provincial badminton champion. Even after three hip operations, he remained committed to exercise and regularly ran, cycled, and swam many kilometers.
Above all, Mike was devoted to his family. He could regularly be found proudly watching and supporting his children at the gym, arena, or playing field. He enjoyed travelling, reading spy thrillers, attending the symphony, and spending time in his garden.
Mike will be remembered for his infectious sense of humour and his constant search for a restaurant that was both “cheap and good.” His warmth, determination, and devotion to his family will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, October 11 at J.A. Snow Funeral home on Lacewood Drive between 2-4pm.
