Born in Halifax, Barrie was the son of the late Laurie (Page) and George Taylor. He had a distinguished career in the Canadian military, serving his country with honour for 44 years. Barrie joined the Militia (1st Field Artillery Regiment) in Halifax, as a gunner, in 1964. He was commissioned from sergeant in 1968 and joined the Regular Force in 1972. With leadership, integrity and dedication to duty, he served in a number of staff and command positions, including United Nations Peacekeeping tours in Cyprus, Gaza, Lebanon, Balkans (Bosnia & Croatia), Syria, the Sinai and Sierra Leone. At home, he served at Land Force Headquarters in St. Hubert and Halifax, and at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. After retirement, Barrie enjoyed volunteering at the Citadel Army Museum.
Barrie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carla MacLellan Taylor, son Chris (Gail McDonell), daughter Carolyn (Charlie Aucoin), and son Gregory. He adored and cherished his six grandchildren - Ava, Charlie, Maggie, Mac, Tessa, and Lillian - who lovingly labelled him GrandBarr. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories of his military adventures, and attending their many hockey games.
The family would like to thank his dedicated GP and friend, Dr. Heather MacKinnon, and long time comrade Scott Pushie for their unwavering support and kindness.
A service and reception will be held on Thursday, May 4th, 10 am, at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund: https://legion.ca/donations
