Born in Mumbai, India, on January 5, 1936, Behli was a proud Parsee and the beloved son of Motibai and Hormusji Bhathena. He spent his childhood on Sir Ratan Tata Path, where his fascination with cars, stamps, and coins first began—a passion that would carry through his life.
In the 1950s, he joined his father at Fali Homi Bros., a distinguished workshop serving Bombay’s elite. Known fondly throughout the city as "Behli-Saab," he worked on everything from Rolls-Royces to MGs, and he was renowned for his craftsmanship. The shop was legendary—not only for its repairs, but for building cars from the ground up.
Just across the street, on the second floor, lived Zarin Naterwala, who would become the love of his life. They were married in 1963. A decade later, they made the bold move from bustling Bombay to the quiet community of Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia. There, Behli continued his trade at Halifax British Motors and later at Cowie Motors, which would become City Mazda.
Behli’s love for the open road never waned. Whether driving to Charlottetown for lunch or Cape Breton for the day, road trips were always on the horizon. His home was a constant hub of activity—filled with card games, good food, music and great company. He thrived on connection and laughter.
In retirement, Behli and Zarin explored the world together. From hiking the Great Wall of China to browsing Bugatti dealerships in Hong Kong, their travels took them across Asia and Europe. Visits to see their sons—one in Hong Kong, the other in London—led to memorable journeys across continents and reunions with the vibrant global Parsee community.
In recent years, Behli cherished time spent with his grandchildren. Summers were for gardening and tinkering with cars; winters were for gathering with friends. Their home and phone were rarely quiet—a testament to the community he cultivated wherever he went. He took great pride in passing down his Parsee traditions and values to the next generation.
Behli is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 62 years, Zarin (née Naterwala); sons Mahiar (Armaity) and Firdaus (Jennifer); cherished grandchildren Liam and Jasmine; and his brothers, Shapur (Khorshed), Bomi (Perveen) and nieces, nephews and many wonderful family friends.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Halifax Hospice for their exceptional care, compassion, and kindness during Behli’s final weeks. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Halifax Hospice Foundation.
Behli leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, kindness, curiosity, and deep-rooted love—for his family, his culture, Nova Scotia and the open road.
