Mom passed away peacefully at Drummond Hall, Parkland Estates, Halifax on September 26, 2011. Born on March 1, 1922, in Helena, Montana, she was the only child of Tom and Mae Hillis.
Mom was raised and educated in Helena and in 1943, married Hal Tucker, a Canadian stationed in Montana for training as a member of the First Special Services. After Hal’s service in the war, they moved to Halifax where Hal completed his medical education. She was a dedicated mother and her unfailing cheerful disposition stood her in good stead while raising her seven children; her amazing adaptablity was always evident throughout her life.
Mom was a committed volunteer and took a great deal of satisfaction from her involvement at the IWK burn unit, as a docent at the AGNS, with the IODE, Saint Matthews United Church and Saint David’s Presbyterian Church. She also worked as a school librarian in Riverview NB. Mom had an endless amount of energy and loved to read, garden and walk, especially in Point Pleasant Park.
Mom was predeceased by both Dr. Hal Tucker and her second husband of 24 years, James Smart. Together Jim and Mom traveled the world and thoroughly enjoyed the merging of two very different life experiences. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her seven children: Kay ( Gordon) Stanfield, Jane Tucker ( Fred Matthews ), Annette ( Tom ) Gillis, Bill ( Sue ) Tucker, Jacquie Tucker, Victoria ( David ) Sullivan, Brent Tucker (Helen Tubrett ), 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 11:00am at Snow’s Funeral Home , 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of choice.
