April 18, 1937 – February 21, 2018
Carl Marchand, 80, of Halifax passed away February 21, 2018 after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Carl was born in Halifax to Amedee and Stella Marchand in 1937. After living for many years in downtown Halifax, and then in Greenbank, near Point Pleasant Park, the family moved to Armdale. In 1956 he married Verle Marie Jessome and together they raised two sons and a daughter with love and lots of laughter. For more than 40 years Carl ran Marchand Construction Ltd., a thriving home building and renovation company. In 1996, Verle, then a social worker at the VG hospital, passed away. Several years later Carl was fortunate enough to find love once again when Sandra George came into his life, remaining by his side until his passing.
A carpenter by trade, and a fisherman by nature, Carl was never happier than casting a line in pursuit of the perfect trout on a sunny afternoon. When he wasn`t on a lake or in the woods on a hunting trip, he kept his hunting and fishing instincts sharp by stalking bargains at a local flea market and angling for deals at neighbourhood yard sales. In his later years he took up model boat building as a hobby, giving it the same care and attention to detail that he had previously reserved for building a home or a fine set of cabinets. Social activities like golf with his sons, grandsons, and friends; or darts and dancing with the senior’s darts gang; were a source of great joy in recent years. Devoted to his family, Carl could be counted on when he was needed and that love and caring was reciprocated by his family and friends.
Carl will be deeply missed by Sandy, sons Bruce (Sally Fuller Marchand), Robert (Alison Gillan), daughter Jennifer, grandsons Matthew (Shannon), Adam (Jessica), Maxwell and Jacob and great-granddaughters Kaylee and Layla. He is also survived by loving sisters Elizabeth (Betty), Diane, and Jean and brothers Roy, Ronald, Douglas, and Gary and numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his parents, Amedee and Stella; wife Verle, sister Evelyn, and brother Raymond.
Visitation will be held at the JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax, on February 26th from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at Saint John the Baptist Church, 26 Purcell’s Cove Rd, on February 27th at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow. Burial will follow at a later date with the immediate family.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the teams at the Kidney Dialysis, Kidney Transplant and Palliative Care Units at the QEII Health Sciences Centre for their exceptional care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the QE II Health Sciences Foundation.
