

Thompson, Carroll “Carl” Frederick - 69, of Halifax passed away peacefully May 12, 2013 in the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax Infirmary after a 14-month difficult yet courageous battle with COPD.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Walter “Toby” and Geraldine (Culling) Thompson.
Carl was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), retiring in 2003 after spending 40 plus years on the docks. He possessed a profound love for family and friends. He enjoyed spending winters in Largo, Florida playing pool with his friend, George, until his health prevented him from going there. Carl enjoyed summers at his cottage on Coxcombe Lake with family and friends playing cards, barbequing, and when he could, trips around the lake on the pontoon boat. His favourite hockey teams were NHL Pittsburg Penquins, especially Sidney Crosby, and QMJHL Halifax Mooseheads.
He is survived by his loving wife Patricia “Patsy” Casey, son Carroll “Carl”, Ontario, stepson Dereck (Jane) Casey, Hammonds Plains, stepdaughter Tanya (Rick Lyman) Casey, Wainwright, Alberta, brother Joseph (Nina) Thompson, Hatchet Lake, sisters Geraldine Strickland, Halifax, and Patricia Thompson, Timberlea, nieces Belinda (David) Landry, Cheryl (Eric) Bonneau and nephews Joseph O’Neil and Paul Thompson. He was “Papa” or “Poppy” to his 4 step grandchildren and “Great Papa” to his 4 step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm Wednesday, May 15th at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax where a celebration of his life will take place at 10 am on Thursday, May 16th, Rev. Lloyd O’Neil officiating, with reception to follow. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville for family only.
Heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of the ICU and 8.3 units of the Halifax Infirmary for their outstanding care and support, ensuring that Carl was kept comfortable in his last remaining days.
