AITKEN, Charles Edward (Ed) – 66, Halifax, passed away on Saturday March 10, 2012, in the Palliative Care Unit at the VG site with his devoted wife Marie by his side. Born in Halifax, he was son of the late Roy and Nellie (Kerr) Aitken. Ed loved nothing more than spending time with his many friends and family. He enjoyed volunteering alongside his wife for various organizations including IWK Kermesse and the Celebrate Canada Committee for N.S. Ed and Marie enjoyed traveling together, especially cruising. He was a member of the CMTA for over 35 years. Ed worked in the office products business for most of his career. He operated his own company, Ed Aitken Sales and Marketing and was a lifetime member of AOPA. As a longtime member of the Liberal Party of Canada, Ed was passionate about politics and enjoyed volunteering alongside countless friends. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Marie Aitken (Hodgson); sisters Audrey Hall (Gerry), Surrey BC; Janet Harris, Georgetown ON; brother Jim (Kathy), Bedford NS. Nieces and nephews Andrea May, Richmond BC; Alison Pickrell, Airdrie AB; Krista Hammond, Milton ON; Jaime Aitken, Toronto ON; Doug Munroe, Richmond Hill ON; Greg Munroe, Mississauga ON; Graham Hall, Strathmore AB; Ben Aitken, Bedford NS; and many great nieces and nephews. Sisters-in-law Doris Donaldson, Dundas ON, and Marjorie Hodgson, Halifax NS. Nephews Bob, David and Brian Speller, Hamilton ON; niece Cheryl Kendall, Dartmouth NS; great nieces Anne-Marie and Josée Moreault, Dartmouth NS; nephew Art Kendall, Dartmouth NS; niece Linda (Tim) Miller and their sons Jay and Troy, Hammonds Plains NS; as well as many close cousins and special friends across Canada and in the U.S. Ed had a rare form of cancer, Chordoma. He was fortunate to work with many skilled health care professionals over the past 10 years. Special thanks to the Palliative Care team at the VG site 7A, especially the two Shelly’s and Lisa, as well as the Halifax Infirmary 7.4, especially Dr. William Oxner, Dr. D MacPherson and nurses Kim, Wendy and Amy. Thanks also to Dr. Eric Smith, Ravines Medical Centre. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of Snow’s Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive where visitation will be held Wednesday March 14 from 7-9pm. Funeral service will take place Thursday March 15 at 2:00pm.
