Claire "Beth" Elizabeth Rahr

8 February , 19853 December , 2018

Beth Rahr, born February 8th, 1985, precious daughter, sister, niece, friend, died peacefully in palliative care surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, December 3rd, 2018.

Survived by her parents, Maria Desjardins, Nicholas Rahr (Judy Robichaud); sisters Ali, Sarah and Maggie Rahr; brothers-in-law Andy Adams and Jack Julian; aunts Winifred Desjardins, Yolanta Desjardins and Estrella Rahr; cousin Natalie Rahr (Andrew Tait); and nephews Teddy and Rudy. Beth is predeceased by her beloved brother Thompson.

Beth called us to be better than we are: she taught us patience, tolerance and forgiveness. She never held a grudge, and her innate charm and innocence won hearts wherever she went. From a young age, family, friends and caregiver buddies were charmed by Beth’s curious mind and excellent sense of humour. They enjoyed making her favourite foods, spending the night with her when Mom was working away, or coaching her in Special Olympics. Beth’s angels also advocated for her, cared for her and fought for her when she needed it most. Luckily for Beth, there are too many to list, but you know who you are.

Many people knew the delight of a Beth greeting: her huge smile and sparkling blue eyes reached out with an elated ‘Hey, buddy!’ Creativity spilled out of her. Beth loved making bracelets, collages and paintings – and she was nothing less than a card artist. Generous by impulse and nature, Beth adored giving these works of art away – her beautiful contributions to her many friends and fans. A music aficionado who spontaneously jumped to her feet and danced, Beth was rarely seen without her headphones listening to her favourite tunes. A decorated Special Olympian, a born shopper with an innate sense of style and love of bling, a list maker extraordinaire, Beth had a capacity for joy that could make a trip for Powerade or new CD’s the highlight of anyone’s day. From the day she was born, Beth was deeply loved, and she carried this knowledge with her throughout her life. She lived a life that was sometimes challenging and difficult for her to understand with enormous courage and grace. Even during Beth’s last days, her wide open heart still beat strongly as she told her family and friends alike, ‘I love you.’ We adored her. Her joyful spirit and welcoming heart will be with us always.

A wake will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Friday, December 7th from 2-4 pm and 6:30 to 8:30pm. A celebration of Beth’s life will take place on Saturday, December 8th at 10:30 am at the Atlantic School of Theology’s St. Columba Chapel, 660 Francklyn Street in Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Emerald Hall through the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.

I knew Beth for a long, long time. Most of my life and her life. I am so sad to say goodbye to my friend. I have many good memories of us together. I remember that Beth loved walking around the buildings at Emerald Hall especially with Staff Karen. And afterward she really loved getting a Power Ade and nachos in a bag. It was her favorite!
I will miss you deeply. I loved you my friend, Beth. Love from Heather.

I had only met Beth a few times and it was easy to see her love for life and the joy of her family. She wa loved by everyone who met her but the special bond she had with her father and my sister Judy was fun to experiance. Nick loved his daughter unconditionally and she loved him the same way. Im glad to have had a chance to be a small part of their interaction. She will be missed.

I never had the chance to meet Beth in person but her sister Ali passed on to me some of her expressions and evocative way of saying things. I feel very lucky to have gotten a little taste of her creativity this way. These phrases often come to mind for me since once you’ve heard them there’s just no better way to get at that idea. Sending my love and heartfelt condolences to Ali and all the family.

I will miss our French conversations. I don't speak very well but it was good enough for Beth. She was thrilled even with my limited vocabulary. And it was fun to see her smiling. She will be missed.

I didn't have the privilege to meet Begh but knew of the love her big sister Sarah had for her. Beth must have been a special person as I could feel the warmth and love whenever Sarsh spoke of her. My heartfelt condolences to all of Beth's family.

We did not know Beth personally but to Nick and Judy, we love you and know she was loved by you and the rest of her family. We started out to come to the Visitation yesterday but the road got very bad in the Valley so we turned back. Sorry we could not be with you to support two of our favorite people. With Love,
Paul and Nancy

I am at a loss for words on learning of dear, sweet Beth's passing. My heart is heavy for you, Maria, and her sisters Ali, Sarah and Maggie. I had the pleasure of being a part of Beth's journey through different channels- L'Arche, SSG and with Emerald Hall. Beth & I were buddies who enjoyed listening to music, dancing and creating beautiful works. Her energy was infectious and her laugh could turn any day around. Her strength and compassion, immeasurable. May she be surrounded by all the furry "lovies" in the world and may her walk-man batteries be never-ending. My deepest and heartfelt condolences.
