

Clyde Henry Sampson, 87 - It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Clyde Sampson. Clyde died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved wife and family, on Dec 12, 2012 in Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Halifax NS. He was born in Halifax NS on May 4, 1925 to George and Annie Sampson (LaPierre). Clyde was a true character with a bold personality. He had a gifted sense of humour and a great love of life. At the young age of 17 Clyde joined the war effort and shipped out with the Merchant Navy, where he served overseas and saw much of the world. After the war, he met & married the love of his life, Betty. He left the navy to join the Halifax Fire Department where he served for 26 years. After his retirement he returned to the sea and worked aboard BIO ships. Clyde was also a proud Legionnaire for over 45 years and made it a point to visit the local Legion in every city or town he visited. Clyde and Betty were married for 61 years and celebrated every anniversary. They raised five boys and five girls together and he always took great pride in his wife and family. He was a beloved grandfather and had a special way with children. Clyde was always the life of any party and made life more fun for those around him. He celebrated every occasion, especially the annual Fireman’s Ball which he organized for many years. In his retirement, he loved to travel and visit with his children, and right up to the time of his death expressed a desire to attend another Blue Jays game. Clyde is survived by his wife Elizabeth “Betty” (Leahy); children - Marlene (Ron MacDonald); Janet O’Hara (Phil); Michael (Elsie); Tom (Theresa); Paul (Cheryl); Peter (Allison); Debbie Mitchell (Greg); Dianna Schacher (Warren); Roger (Carla); and Gail; brothers – Roy (Shirley); Donnie (Bonnie); sister-in-laws – Marguerite Harper (Reg); Mary Ching; brother-in-law, Bill Leahy (Helen). He was predeceased by his parents George and Annie Sampson; mother-in-law Hannah Leahy; brothers – Pat, Jim, Joe, Bill, Sidney, Alonzo, and Gordon, and brother-in-law George Ching. He will be greatly missed by his thirty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at the VG palliative care unit, the VON (especially Tracy), and the wonderful team at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital for all of their care and compassion. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 on Thursday, December 13th. Funeral services to be held in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, December 14th at 2:30. Reception to follow at funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit VG Site, care of the QE II Foundation, in memory of Clyde Sampson.
