Daniel Joseph Nau, Jr., 79, Bedford NS, passed from this world on Monday, Sept. 27, after a brave final battle against cancer, with his loving wife and soulmate Elaine (McGee) Nau, of 42 years by his side. His memory will be cherished by his wife Elaine, son Jonah Nau, grand children Stephenie and Jonah, great grand daughter Bayley, brothers Tim (Joyce), Terry (Cheryl), nephews Christopher and Danny Nau, and many sister and brothers in law. Danny was predeceased by his parents, Daniel J. Nau Sr. and Olive Kenvin Nau and brother, Larry.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Dan grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. He graduated from Methodist College (NC) in 1966. Dan then served in the Army as a medical technician during the Vietnam War Era, finishing his three-year stint with two years at Fort Lewis, WA. During this period and after discharge from the military Danny pursued an advanced education in Clinical Psychology in Tacoma WA and Victoria B.C. He worked as a psychologist in prison and youth centers, taught psychology at University and Colleges and practiced psychotherapy.
Danny met Elaine in the mid 1970s in Victoria, BC. They married and settled down in Vancouver before returning to Elaine’s native Prince Edward Island in 1987. In 1990, they moved to Nova Scotia where they made their home for over three decades.
Dan and Elaine found time to travel extensively in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Gifted with an inquisitive mind and a curiosity about life, Dan made friends wherever he roamed. He worked seasonally for a decade at a local Garden Shop, regaling customers with his knowledge of plants, flowers and trees. A religious person in his younger days, Dan always believed that the true religion could be found in the beauty of Nature.
Danny's memory for details was like a steel trap. He loved gardening and giving tours of his many gardens over the years, reciting the names of all his varied plants and a short story to go with each treasured tree, shrub or flower. He loved being surrounded by family and friends enriched conversation and good food. Danny loved telling long stories and jokes, sometimes repeatedly.
Danny believed life was the GIFT and celebrated each moment with that thought in mind. His passion for life, lead to him being a self described global thinker. Danny had a deepened respect for all people he met, as well as a genuine interest in their stories, lifestyle choices and formed opinions. Danny will be remembered for his unconditional kindness. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
