

David’s career began at Dominion grocery store, to Intercity Delivery Courier Service, then Irving car wash and gas station (Robie Street). A brief stint with the Canadian Coast Guard, he sailed on the Labrador. David made his way westward and worked at Calgary Roof Truss for several years. He eventually returned home to Halifax and attended Commercial Safety College to acquire his truck license and airbrake ticket. He worked for Midland for 10 years as a truck owner/operator. David later attended Mount Saint Vincent University to pursue his undergraduate degree, majoring in psychology and a minor in sociology. He went on to work over 30 years in the human services field. David was a case worker and was trained to provide acupuncture to clients at Alcare Place. He also worked as a residential counselor with Metro Community Housing with specific training in nonviolent crisis intervention. David enjoyed his work in these special services, he believed working with his team of co-workers was rewarding and helpful to make a positive difference in many people’s lives.
David loved driving and made many trips from Halifax to Calgary. He also drove from Calgary to Vancouver, down the Pacific Coast to San Diego and back east to Houston and then home on a Greyhound bus. He also travelled to Vegas to see Larry Holmes, Trevor Berbick boxing match and then a Diana Ross concert. Quite the events to witness he told me when he called collect from Las Vegas to tell me all about it.
David was predeceased by his mother, Vida Lucy Howell and his father, Albert Whitfield Howell. He is survived by his sister, Diane Blair; niece and nephews, Melanie, Trevor and Nigel.
As per David’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place.
