I was sad to hear of the passing of Big Don. I can still remember my days working at the Fairview Cemetery as a summer student and him bringing in a new group to train them on the police motorcycles. The Sarge would be quite hard on them but would give me a big smile and a laugh as he drove by. He was one of those blessed individuals whose personality was bigger than his person. I still get a big smile thinking of him when I drive by policemen on my Harley. 
I hope you will draw great comfort of your memories with him. He was one of the good guys!
I will have a good thought for you and your families at the time of your loss.

We would like to take this moment Katherine, Donald, David and Susan to express our profound sadness for a man and his family, who have touched so many.  I have known Sgt. for a long time and we have shared in many discussions.  He was a wise, experienced police officer. I at the time quite his junior, beginning my service and years later in that service with the RCMPolice.  My wife Pat (Mitts) use to baby sit for your Mom and Dad went you were babies.  Pat was very upset at this notice of loss. I recalled different times he and I have met since his Police retirement, each and every occasion updates, stories of mutual friends and yes, even the odd joke!  Be proud as I know you are of who he was, what he was and how his experiences touched so many.  He was/is  a very principled and dedicated man who I respected tremendeously.  A mentor, a comrade in policing and a morally grounded person. Please accept those happy memories from my family to yours, at a tough time.  There is no doubt in my mind where he is today,that is with you.  He willsoon beleading again,as he has in the past but in another jurisdiction.  May he rest in peace, know you Dad was a great man and was loved by many in other families, including ours.  Love and thoughts Murray/Pat

Dear Kay, Susan, John and family: We count ourselves extremely fortunate to have spent so many wonderful times with Don and Kay, where laughter, great conversations and carrot cake were never in short supply at the Whittemore household. As we celebrate Don's life, and mark his passing, Greg and I and our family know that Don leaves his greatest legacy in the family that he loved so very dearly and we know that Susan, John, Heather, David and Laura brought him great joy. As a highly admired member of the Halifax Police Force,  Don's superb interpersonal skills and sense of humour served him well. We send our heartfelt condolences to Kay, Susan, John, Heather, David and Laura, as well as to Sandy and David and their respective families.You are in our thoughts and our prayers.
