Passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2018. Doris was born in New Germany, NS on Nov. 23rd, 1923, of parents Twining Albert and Carrie Parker Zwicker. Her schooling from primary to high school graduation was received in New Germany. In the early war years she came to Halifax to receive secretarial training, following which she was employed with the town of Lunenburg. In the early post-war years she returned to Halifax to take a secretary position with the accounting firm Nightingale Hayman.
Doris is survived by husband Bill, son, Peter (Laura) and grandson, Andrew of Halifax, and granddaughter, Jaclyn (Adam), and great-grandchildren, Kenyon and Aviana of Victoria, BC, son, David (Sarah) and granddaughters, Jemina and Ann of Maleny, Australia, and sister-in-law, Betty (Redmond) of Halifax. She was predeceased by brothers, Edward, George and sister, Joan (Corkum).
Doris, a much loved wife, mother, Nana and Auntie to all her family had many and varied interests in her life which ranged from her skills in painting, knitting, being a capable seamstress, playing bridge and being a good friend to many. A priority was her five day a week swim at Dalplex, but most importantly to her was her commitment to a volunteer role over 50 years at the Children’s and subsequently the IWK Children’s Hospital. She was a consummate volunteer which also included her Red Cross blood-donor recruitment telephone calls and her many neighbourhood canvasser calls for the worthy charitable organizations which sought her help. She was a Charter Member of the Professional Engineer’s Wives Association and very much enjoyed her companionship with other members in the Readers Group of that organization.
In lieu of a visitation and church service, a family gathering with nieces and nephews to celebrate Doris’ life will take place in August.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home for their dedicated service over the past seven and one-half years.
