

She was the youngest daughter of Daniel Brown, (North Sydney NS) and Ida Pike, (Channel NL). She was born in Halifax and grew up in Fairview with 11 brothers and sisters. In her younger days Dot worked in the accounting/adjusting office at Sears in Halifax. In 1955 she married Leo Arkelian of Halifax.
She left Sears to become a full time mother of their 3 boys, Wayne, Brian, and Donald. Dot will be remembered for her kindness and generosity toward her family and friends. Regarded by many as a Master Chef with a variety of skills, producing rave reviews from family, friends and church members. Her culinary skills included sustaining and reproducing legacy Armenian dishes from Leo’s mom, Sophie. Dot’s desserts were incredible as well as her pickles and preserves.
Dot lived a full life travelling with Leo and spending winters in Florida. She was a life-long member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Halifax. She was a member at Mayflower Curling Club and later Ashburn Golf Club.
In her youth, she enjoyed Badminton leagues. She was a champion Bridge player but declined tournament play, opting for home games with family and friends. Dot was a pillar of leadership to those who knew her, and they often confided in her for advice on life’s problems. Her ability to give no-nonsense takes on life were humorous and truthful. She will be extremely missed but the memories and guidance will last forever in all who knew her.
Dorothy was predeceased by all her 11 brothers and Sisters, and husband Leo(2008).
She is survived by her 3 sons: Wayne (Nathalie McJannet), Brian (Sharon Langille), Donald, and her 2 amazing grandsons, Patrick (Abbey) and Jeffrey Arkelian who she was so proud of. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to nieces Janice and Charlotte Rogers and niece Margo Gammon who helped comfort Dorothy in her final days. Also thanks to Rev. Marion Burns for her pastoral care.
Celebration of Life will take place on Friday Feb. 20th at 11am. St.John’s Anglican Church- 2187 Larry Uteck Blvd., Bedford West, NS. Reception to follow after the service.
