Age 91, of Hammonds Plains, passed away in the morning of the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century at Parkland Assisted Living Facility, Halifax. Edith was the 7th of 8 children of Garnet and Vera (Elliot) MacMichael of Carroll’s Corner and was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald, as well as siblings Evelyn (Rose), Lorne, James, Jesse (Horne), Albert and John. She is survived by her sons Scott of Oakfield and Steven (Yukari) of Hackett’s Cove, grandson Dale (Carolyn) of Fall River, great grandchildren Jenna, Joel and Josie, daughter-in-law Debbie, and sister Hope Billard.
Born into a large farming family in 1929, hard work was ingrained in her from childhood, and in her later years, she would often remind us that, as a child, she ‘drove the horses’ for her father. Graduating from Provincial Normal College in 1950, Edith embarked on a 35-year teaching career, mostly at Hammonds Plains Consolidated Elementary School, where she eventually taught children of former students. While boarding in Hammonds Plains, she met Donnie, married in 1953 and lived in the house they built until 2017. She was very active in the community as a member of Hammonds Plains First Baptist Church, the Women’s Missionary Society, the Ladies Auxiliary of the fire department, and the Elliot Clan. She was always outgoing with a quick sense of humour, and enjoyed watching out for the children of Haverstock Hill and beyond, by supervising swimming in Schmidt’s Lake and driving to various activities. She loved to bake and took great pride in her knitting; many family members and friends wear the sweaters, mittens, socks and caps that she loved creating. Upon retirement, she travelled extensively with Donald across Canada, Europe and in 1994, to Japan.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Parkland for making Edith’s last 4 years comfortable and dignified, and to Kelly Evans and Cathy Lebrun for their valuable friendship and support. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Edith’s Life will be held after covid restrictions ease.
Donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Hammonds Plains, the United Church of Gays River, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.
