
Walsh, Elizabeth M. “Betty” passed away peacefully at her home, Aug. 4, 2013 after a lengthy and valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Marystown, NL on September 22, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Richard V. Pittman and Mary(Caines)Pittman. Following studies at Memorial University, Betty taught school for seven years, during which time she was considered to be an articulate, competent and kind educator. On February 13, 1944 she married the love of her live, Michael Walsh who was serving with the Royal Canadian Navy in St. John’s NL. At the cessation of hostilities in the North Atlantic, the couple then migrated to Halifax in 1945 as her husband now a Chief Petty Officer, was transferred here with his ship and received a discharge due to demobilization. At that point, they set up permanent residence e in in Halifax. Betty began a career with T. Eaton Co. in the cash office where she was promoted to manager. She was employed by the company for twenty-five years and then accepted a position with the Killam Library, Dalhousie University. A devout Roman Catholic, she was a member of the CWL and gave generously to her parishes St. Theresa’s and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Betty is survived by her sister Nancy (Bill) Withers, several nieces and nephews which include two special nieces, Rickola and Linda Withers. She was predeceased by her loving husband Michael in June, 1991, her parents, sisters Annie and Eileen, brothers Joseph, Leonard and Richard. Arrangements entrusted to JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. Hfx B3S 0E1(455-0531) where visitation will be held Tuesday, August. 6, 7-9pm. Funeral Mass celebrated by Fr. Edward Grant, assisted by Deacon Brian Smith will be held Wednesday, August 7, 10:30am in St. Theresa’s Church, North St., Hfx Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. The family wishes to sincerely thank Mr. David Delorey and the ladies who have given their kind and compassionate care to Betty during her illness over the past five years.
