Emma L. Dicks

Emma Lavinia Dicks (Spicer) passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Ocean View Continuing Care Centre, at the age of 99. Born on October 24, 1914, to Hubert and Julia (Dewis) Spicer at Wharton, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Emma was a registered Nurse. She graduated from the first Yarmouth Hospital in 1941. She worked in Windsor and then came to Halifax where she met her husband, Claude Dicks. They owned and operated the Willow Nursing Home In Halifax for twenty years. She was a member of the St John Ambulance, being nursing officer for Nova Scotia and received the honour of being made Dame of Grace, a Lifetime Member and Past Matron of Halifax Chapter #7, a Past Grand Representative to Louisville, Kentucky, a member of the Halifax Women’s Business and Professional Club, the Soroptimist Club, which was replaced by the Futura Club, a member of the Local Council of Women, the I.O.D.E., The Canadian Club, and the Pensioner’s Concerned. She and her husband were members of the Armdale Yacht Club, where they kept their sail boat, the Atlantica, which was built at Expo in Montreal. Emma was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Claude, Dicks; brothers, Harold, Robert and Stanley; sister, Stella. Emma is survived by her nephew, Floyd Spicer, who was responsible for her care during the past fifteen years; sister-in-law, Jean Spicer, Advocate Harbour, NS; nephews, Claude Miller (Marie), Fred Rhymes (Val); nieces Jean Currie, Pearle Hewitt, Thelma Beckett (Clary). Emma was an avid traveller, having toured many countries and thoroughly enjoyed life. Special thanks to the staff of Ocean View Continuing Care Centre for their wonderful care during the past eight years. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 28 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 6:00—8:00 pm in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, (455-0531). Funeral service to be held in the J. A.
