Eric was born in St. Stephen, NB where he grew up until the family moved to Fredericton. He graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business from UNB, and, as Eric would often say, “got a PhD in bridge”! He was an avid competitive bridge player who competed successfully locally, regionally, nationally and internationally at the highest levels. In the early 90’s Eric served as President of Halifax Bridge World where he played for over 50 years. As a single-digit handicap golfer, he enjoyed over 30 years playing with a regular foursome as a member of Ashburn Golf Club. Eric was a lifelong baseball enthusiast, who loved to travel, enjoyed movie nights (and popcorn!), and going to the theatre.
Eric completed his CA studies at Dalhousie University and was privileged to have worked in senior financial roles for several family-owned businesses over his 40 year career. His love of business became an important part of his retirement plan when he put his skills to work on managing the family’s investment portfolio.
Eric is survived by his loving wife and partner of 26 years, Mary, his brother, Hugh McLellan (Mac) Balkam (Wanita), two stepsons, Allan Moulton (Usha Narayana) and Brian Moulton (Tina Simolari), and four grandchildren: Ainsley, Lex, Jai and Devan….all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh Sadler Balkam and Yvonne Lorraine Balkam and his brother Keith Gordon Balkam.
Special thanks to Fred Honsberger and Suzan MacLean for their special support throughout the past year.
Cremation has taken place. A private interment will be scheduled at a later date. Donations in Eric’s memory may be made to Halifax Bridge World, or to a charity of your choice.
