

Born in Windsor, N.S., Evelyn was the daughter of Cyrus and Madge (Marshall) Ryan. She graduated from Edgehill School (Windsor), class of 1949, where she met her future husband, Don. She attended the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing, graduating in 1952, with awards in Nursing Arts, Anatomy and Physiology. She married in 1953 and worked until the birth of her first child. Evelyn was a devoted wife and mother to her family and over the years volunteered at their activities, especially at Senobe Aquatic Club. She taught at the Dartmouth Head Start Preschool Program providing young children with early intervention. She was deeply interested in Nova Scotia history, and volunteered and worked at the Nova Scotia Museum. She became the family genealogist and recorded her elaborate family history. Evelyn was a long time member of the Halifax Ski Club as an alpine and x-country skier and loved her trips to Cape Smokey. The “Lake”, a summer cottage on Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton, was one of her favorite places, where she spent time with her family and pets. Evelyn volunteered with the Kings-Edgehill School Alumni and the Food Bank, and canvassed for various organizations. Most recently, she was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed outings of many kinds. She loved to travel, including many family visits, and in 1971-72 resided in Germany with her husband and children.
Evelyn is survived by her four children, Rob (Annette MacIntyre) MacLeod, Heather (Bob) Duffley, Mary Jane (Ian Fraser) MacLeod and Andrew (Marie née Bowser) MacLeod. Her grandsons, Nicholas and Allan MacLeod, Halifax, and Gordon and Collin Duffley, Manchester, NH were a huge source of pride and happiness to her. Other surviving family members include Monica Eddy and Gerald Best, B.C., Allan and Shirley Lennox, Calgary, and Barbara Haugen and Dan Hodes, Washington, DC, . She is predeceased by her husband, Don, and her brother, Ted Shields.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, November 30, from 5 - 8 pm, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 3, at Grace United Church, 70 King Street, Dartmouth.
