It is with deep sadness that we report Frederick Leo Carter, age 85 (b. August 7, 1941) passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary early on Thursday, August 27, his devoted wife of 23 years, Mary at his side.
He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Gaudet), son Steven (with his wife Kangxian Joy Zhao), and adored granddaughters Zoe Zuyi and Irene Yanzhi, as well as his brother Donald.
He is predeceased by his parents Frank Lawrence and Ruby Catherine (O’Leary) Carter, sister Kay, brother Wayne, his first wife of 29 years and Steven’s mother Judith Lee Duncan.
As a young man Fred worked at the Canso fish plant, then served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 11 years. Upon leaving service Fred became a heavy equipment mechanic first at Baxter Equipment and then for thirty years with Nova Scotia Tractors & Equipment.
More than anything Fred loved the woods, rivers, lakes, and ocean and as much as possible he would spent his free time hunting and fishing. When not immersed in the natural world he loved playing cards.
Cremation is in the care of J. A. Snow’s Funeral Home and his ashes will be scattered on the barrens in Guysborough County or on the waters of Chedabucto Bay off the Queensport Light Island.
