He is survived by his wife Sylvia Buckland (Petrie) of 67 years, son Gary Buckland (Mary), grandchildren Kyle Buckland (Erin), Zachary Buckland (Jacquelyn), Cody Vanderheyden, Nikki Kyler (Garrion), great grandchildren R.J, Dominick, Axel, and Xander. He was preceded in death by his daughters Suzanne Buckland (1995) and Karen Vanderheyden (2025).
Bucky was born in Burgeo NFLD, where he lived until joining the military to serve during the Korean War. Following his service, Bucky was stationed in Halifax, where he met the love of his life, Sylvia.
Bucky served with distinction on many vessels throughout his naval career. His service included time aboard the cable ship CS Lord Kelvin, HMCS Blue Throat, HMCS Quest, and HMCS Sackville, where he served until the ship’s decommissioning. Bucky achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Bosun, a reflection of his dedication, leadership, and years of proud service.
Bucky and his wife, Sylvia, cherished their summers spent visiting his beloved home of Newfoundland, a tradition they continued for many years until he was no longer able to make the drive. Bucky took great pride in his cars and especially enjoyed talking about them, always making sure they were polished and shining. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, quiet kindness, and for always being a true gentleman. Though a man of few words, Bucky’s love for his family was unwavering, and he always placed them at the centre of his life.
A private service will be held to honour and remember Bucky as he is laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice, and that an act of kindness be done in Bucky’s memory.
“Some people leave behind wealth. Grampy left five dollar bills folded into little hands- and memories worth far more.”
