Gary Thomas Hanrahan

Well-loved brother, nephew, uncle, and friend to many, Gary passed away suddenly at home at age 66 on 4 August 2026.

Born in Halifax, he was the son of Gerald and Doreen Hanrahan. Gary is survived by sisters Susan (Tim Taylor) of East Pennant, and Carole (Robert Clark) of Halifax, nephews Nick Jarrett (Selina Fortier) of Dartmouth and Ben Jarrett (Sara Paquette) of Cow Bay, and great-nieces and nephews Collin, Caraline, Cole, Lydia and Frederick. Gary was predeceased by his husband of 13 years, Scott Price.

After graduating from St. Pat’s High School, Gary spent several years at Dalhousie before switching to the NS Community College where he studied computer programming. A student work term with the federal government turned into a career, when Public Services and Procurement Canada hired him immediately after graduation. Gary worked there for 30 years, becoming Senior Technical Specialist.

Gary was proud member of Halifax’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and volunteered for many organizations and events including Halifax Pride, and Wayves magazine.

Almost everyone who met Gary remarked on his remarkably deep voice. It was no surprise he was volunteer host of his own show on Dalhousie University’s CKDU Radio – that voice was made for radio. His bass singing voice also made him an asset in many choirs over the years.

In 2014, Gary and Scott purchased their beautiful home in Maitland, NS. After Scott’s death in 2019, Gary continued to live there, becoming ever more integrated into his chosen place. He worked as a casual employee in the Canada Post office directly across the road from his house, meeting and greeting neighbours from around the community. Friends from his book club, the local madrigal group, and the CHArt Society will particularly miss him.

There will be a celebration of life at 2pm at the High Tides Art and Community Centre Hall, 11 Church Street, Maitland, NS on Sunday, 23 August, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CHArt Society
