

Sheppard, George Edward, 76 of Halifax, after a lengthy illness, passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary in the presence of his “Chosen Brother” Brian Jarvis and companion Helen on Monday, January, 22, 2018. Born in New Glasgow, NS, to Mae (Chandler) Sheppard and the late William Albert Sheppard.
He is survived by his daughters, Raeanne (Sheppard) Richards (Pickering), and Shalyn Williams - de Coteau (Kaamil); longtime companion, Helen Parsons; sisters, Dorothy (Toronto), and Louise (Pickering); brother, William (Vancouver); several grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Earlier in life, George was a prominent figure at the George Dixon Drop-in Centre, later delving into airplanes and became a pilot with the RCAF. George then became a Lab Research Technician at Dalhousie University. In 1989, he was recognized by the Halifax City Regional Library for his outstanding volunteer service; in 2000, by the Maritime Ship Modelers Guild for his support of the Millennium Model Boat Show; in 2004, by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for his commitment and dedication as a museum volunteer.
On October 17, 2015, George was inducted into the Maritime Motorsport Hall of Fame after more than 40 years of competing in local Motorsports and working as an official, with 43 consecutive years as (Honourary founding) member of the Atlantic Sports Car Club (ASCC). George has said “Slaloms are my first love…” and as one of only three drivers to compete nationally in every Canadian AutoSlalom held from 1972 – 1991. He won the AutoSlalom Championship a record 13 times, the regional overall championship a record 8 times, and is a 3 time national class champion, who competed locally as recently as 2014.
George was a “skilled avid builder” of remote control model boats and a Mr. Fix-it to many of his friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home. 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 26, at 11:00 am at the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Rhonda Y. Britton officiating. Interment will take place at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery following the service. There will be a repast in J.A. Snow Funeral Home following the burial.
