Gord was born in Halifax to the late Charles G. and Ella (Allen) Smith. He was also predeceased by his Stepmother, Mary (Covey) Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Yvonne (White) of Middle Sackville, sons Michael (Barb) of Ontario, Richard (Martha) of Ontario & daughter Susan (Scott) Holman of Middle Sackville, brother Dennis (Donna) of Dartmouth, sister Debbie Bower of Halifax, grandchildren Gavin & Claire Holman and several nieces and nephews.
Gord loved being surrounded by family and enjoyed every minute of every family gathering. Family was everything to him. Many of his favorite times was playing card and board games. Especially, when he won a game of 45’s against his sons, who thought they were unbeatable! He always looked forward to weekend visits with the Holman clan where he’d spoil his 2 ‘could do no wrong’ grandchildren with hugs and kisses and so much love.
His positivity and upbeat presence will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. His kindness never went unnoticed. Always offering a helping hand, advice or one of his many tools. Many days we would find Gord sitting in his lawn chair with the garage door open to welcome passing neighbors, who he considered friends, with a smile and a beer.
As a loyal member of IUEC Local 125, Smitty was employed with Otis Elevator for 43.5 years. During his career he made many lifelong friendships. In particular, he formed an unbreakable bond with Lou Morrissey and Gordon (Tottie) Shanks. He took great pride in his work accomplishments in all 4 Atlantic Provinces and a special assignment in Israel. The completed elevators in the newly constructed Purdy’s Wharf is the ‘crown jewel’ in his extensive work history.
After retiring in 2008, Gord put into play his interest in antique vehicles by purchasing his ’51 Ford truck. After tinkering and making it shine, he would travel with his brother Dennis who had a ’51 Mercury truck to many car shows throughout the Maritimes. He was always so proud when his handiwork would pay off with an award.

This amazing man who never judged or complained, has left this world. As we all grieve for the loss of this ‘gentle giant’, Gord would be the first to say: “It is what it is!”
