The memory of Helen Dares brings joy to my heart.
Helen was my Head Nurse when I worked on unit 7B at the VG.
That is a long time ago!
I admired her for her compassion, competence and joy in her profession. She was the kind of nurse I aspired to be.
May her family  be assured she is in a place of rest enjoying the fruit of her great work!

I'm deeply saddened to learn of Helen's passing but thankful she is now in the arms of her Savior.  I've known Helen since I was a little girl. I am now 55. She was always a source of wisdom and encouragement to me.  Sending prayers for comfort, strength and peace as you navigate this difficult journey.

Dear Janet, Cory and Brandon,

So sorry to learn of your loss. I always enjoyed time spent with your Mom/ Grandmother.

I have spoken of my “spiritual moms” - but Helen was my first and I loved her dearly.

They call Helen a prayer warrior - and she was.   Everyone saw her that way.

It seemed like she had a hotline to heaven - I sometimes worried about calling her too much in the early days, but she never had an issue with it, always encouraging me.

She was wise, kind, brave and certainly had her own share of heartbreak - Clyde’s death with cancer, the loss of her son, Michael - yet she never lost sight of her vision, her purpose and her faith.

She and Ruth prayed together in intercession - at home and often in the church prayer room.

The day I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, I called the church - because I was looking for Helen - not the Pastors

She was often the first person people went to for advice or prayer

Just before the pandemic, we used to have Friendship Corner every week at our church.  I would go and save a place for Helen - and Ruth would try to bring her over, but it took a while - because there was always a crowd of folks looking to talk to her and for Helen to pray for them.

Deepest sympathies go out to Janet, Cory (whom I remember from the Leapers Nursery at the Rock), Brandon and all of the family - know that there are many of us here grieving with you.

And you know, although Helen’s homecoming was undoubtedly joyous and I am thrilled to know she is with Clyde, Michael and so many others - and with her Saviour - I cannot help but believe that there is probably still a crowd of people following Helen - waiting to talk and pray with her :)

I knew Helen for many years when we both attended Rock Church.
She was always so pleasant and kind and faithful to her Lord and Saviour. She will be missed.

As a young nurse, I worked with Helen Dares at the V.G. in Halifax. She was  such an amazing nurse; always encouraging us Newbies and  an inspiration to be and do the best we are capable of. I recall an evening( New Years Eve) ; we had admissions coming quickly; I don't know how she knew we needed help...but there she was in uniform-ready to go to work. I never forgot her generosity, her dedication ..she taught me so much. I know her goodness lives on and that she is at rest with the Lord.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Helen. As a young man in University around 1970, I had a job as a nursing orderly in the O.R. at the Victoria General. Helen was my supervisor of course. I remember her as one who impressed me, with her kindness, professionalism, and thoroughness. I later became a medical laboratory technologist teacher and after retirement, got my doctorate in Theology. I see Helen followed a similar path,  so I know she rests with Jesus at this time. Peace and strength to you in the days ahead.
