Helen Marie Pelham

29 July , 194125 May , 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Helen Marie Pelham, age 77, of Herring Cove, on May 25, 2019, in the QE II Hospital, Halifax Infirmary site. Born in Truro on July 29, 1941, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Belliveau) Pearson.

Helen graduated from high school in Truro, and after beginning her career in her hometown, she moved to Halifax, where she began an over 50-year career with the CBC. During these years, she was given many opportunities to travel, including the Olympics in Japan and Australia, as well as work on many different productions, including Street Cents, Codco, and finally, This Hour has 22 Minutes where she spent the last 24 years of her career working and making many, many great friends. By the time she finished, she knew this show inside and out, sometimes referred to as the “college of knowledge” by co-workers. Helen also enjoyed her free time, golfing in the summers, skiing in the winters, and playing cards, in her later years chasing nightly jackpots as she and her partner Annette took their games on the road, traveling from church hall to church hall. Her most cherished activity, however, was spending time with her grandchildren, watching them play sports, vacationing with them, and their favorite, having sleepovers at gramma’s.

Helen is survived by her husband of 52 years, Peter; her son, Stephen (Janine); grandchildren Jack, and Simon; and many nieces and nephews, every one of them ”her favorite”. She was predeceased by her parents; and brothers, Bernie (Shirley) and Reg. Her family would like to thank Lisa Cosgrove for all she has done during Helen’s illness.

Visitation will be from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm, Tuesday, May 28, at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral service will take place at 11 am, Wednesday, May 29 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 6 St Michaels Ave, Halifax, with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Dear Peter and Family:

Dave and I were disheartened to hear the sad news about Helen. Being part of the CBC family in Halifax, we were all aware that Helen worked very very hard. Her strong work ethic made for better shows and made us all better people. She always had a word for everybody....she was truly a CBC legend.

With deep sympathy,
David Cameron and Mary Munson (Sydney)

Although for many years we have not seen each other, Helen and I were long time friends. IN fact, when we were in our teens (late teens) we had an apartment on Dresden Row while we were both trying to find ourselves in the world. We later moved with more friends to Chebucto Road. Helen had a deep interest in CBC starting with Jack Johnson. I remember well the times and the laughs we all had. I am so sorry for your Loss. Helen was a wonderful woman and friend. I know she will be missed by many and always thought of fondly as she was always a woman with a smile on her face. I understand she had been ill and for that I am happy she has gone to a better place where there is no sickness. Please accept my heartfelt condolences I am truly sorry you have lost this wonderful woman from your lives. .

Dear Peter, Stephen and family,
I learned only late Wednesday that Helen had passed, and then discovered I’d missed the opportunity to extend my condolences in person, at the visitation or the funeral reception. I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear that she’d been ill, and taken from you while still so young at heart. Navigating the new world in her absence, will be challenging; no one is ever ready to say farewell to their spouse, their mom, or their grandmother. We can hope that memories of the wonderful way in which she lived her life, and filled ours with laughter and kindness, will help to sustain you through this most difficult time. Helen and Peter were a part of the village that raised many children – my husband among them. As someone who ‘married into the Cove’ they welcomed me with warmth and an open door, from the very beginning. For that I have been, and will continue to be, always grateful. May she rest in peace.
In sympathy,
Eileen Murphy

Peter, Stephen and family
I was saddened to learn of Helen’s passing , strange as it was I had just told a friend on the weekend how she and Carol waited for my late flight into Raleigh for a girls golf week in Myrtle Beach. That was such a great time as were so many times spent in her presence, she was always so full of life, laughs and fun. Helen was also full of love, caring and generosity and could be counted on as a real friend. As sad as this time is be thankful for all the wonderful memories she has blessed us with. Sending love and hugs, wishing the distance wasn’t so great.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Peter and Stephen and the rest of the large Pelham clan. Helen was such a beautiful caring, honest, common sense friend . Many a time she was my rock and perfect advisor. 48 years ago I remember my first time meeting. Helen laughing and surrounded by many Airedale puppies. Always there when she was needed. Helen was my sons Godmother and all my children loved Aunt Helen. We had some great adventures for sure when Peter and Stephan she came to visit us in another country or another province. Helen may you rest in peace my friend you will be missed by so many who loved you so.
