

Born in St. John’s, NF, he was the son of the late Eric and Leila Rankin.
Ian was a loving husband, father and grandfather; and was greatly admired by all who knew him. He was an avid reader and had amassed an extensive library based on his interests. He had a passion for model railroading and has a vast collection of trains including a garden railway that was a source of joy for him and his eight grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Ian served in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and studied at Memorial University of Newfoundland. A town planner by profession, Ian maintained his MCIP designation, and was a past member of the board of governors of TUNS.
Ian is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carole (McGrath) and his three sons, David (Tracey) of Bedford, NS, Jonathan (Tracey) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Andrew (Lisa) of Bedford, NS. His grandchildren, Felicity, Hillary, Alexander, Jack, Christopher, Liam, Bennett and Imogen, will dearly miss him.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 2 P.M., J.A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS, Reverend Kenn Stright officiating, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association
