

Belmore, Jacqueline Lillian – 78, of Halifax passed away peacefully on February 3, 2012 in Northwood Nursing Home surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Greek River, PE she was the only daughter of the late John Johnston and Myrtle (Butler) Johnston Peters. She was educated at the Halifax School for the Deaf where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband of 56 years Gary Belmore. Jackie worked at many occupations throughout her life and in the mid-70’s went back to school to train as a key punch operator and used her new skills at Maritime Medical Care retiring in 1994 to care for her mother. Jackie had many talents and interests including baking, sewing, needlework, tole painting, gardening, bowling and curling. She loved to spend time with her family and catch up with friends at the social gatherings of the Deaf Community both here in NS and across Canada. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gary, son Wade (Gail), daughter Susan (Joe Vermes), her 3 grandsons (Dylan Belmore, Matthew and Jason Vermes), her Aunts (Lois Shipley, Shirley MacSwain, Ella Irving, PE, and Helen MacSwain, NB), her many friends in the deaf community and our dear family friend Mary Green who helped care for our mom in these last few years. She was predeceased by her infant son Aubrey, and a large extended family of aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank all the staff of 9 Center, Northwood who have helped to care for Jackie over the last 5 years and while the list is long, we do want to thank Buffy, Jennifer, Theresa, Maria, Rose, Mary and Jenny. No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at 11AM, Wednesday, February 8, 2011 in the Northwood Penthouse, 2615 Northwood Terrace, Halifax. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to Alzheimer’s Society, Deafness Advocacy, Northwood Deaf Activity Fund or the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
