James Daniel Grant, 80, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Hospice Halifax after a courageous battle with cancer. The elder son of Rev. Dr. D.M. Grant and Jean S. Grant, Jim was born in Halifax on Feb. 4, 1939. He grew up in Montreal where he graduated from Westmount High School and Sir George Williams (now Concordia) University. Jim then returned to Halifax where he received his B. Ed. from Dalhousie and began his teaching career in 1963 at Richmond School. He was transferred to Sir Charles Tupper School where he taught Grade 6, was appointed vice-principal, and then principal. During his 20 years as principal, Jim was highly respected in the school community as an administrator, mentor, colleague, and friend. A true gentleman, he was loved by his students and could call every one by name. Jim will be remembered for his sense of humour, his love of Broadway theatre and big cities (particularly NYC), and as a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and the University of Michigan Wolverines. He was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother David. He is survived by his wife, Janice Worthen, and numerous Cape Breton cousins. Funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at St. Matthews’s United Church on Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Betsy Hogan officiating. Interment will follow in Habitant Cemetery, Habitant, Kings County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society, the SPCA or a charity of your choice. Heartfelt thanks go to the brilliant doctors who extended Jim’s life - Dr. Alwin Jeyakumar, Dr. David Bell, surgeons Dr. Chris Kenyon and Dr. Lucy Helyer, to his family physician Dr. Gena Marshall, and to the doctors and nurses in Palliative Care and at Hospice Halifax whose compassionate care during Jim’s final months made such a difference.
