James Paul Robinson

Jim Robinson, 84, died peacefully at Adeline Hall on July 9, 2026. He was the son of Margo Sarah Robinson (née Paul) of Lennox Island Mi’kmaw Nation. In his youth, Jim was Vice-President of the Hornets and served time for armed robbery, a crime for which he later earned a full pardon.

In the 1970s, following the birth of his children, Jim and his family relocated to the Eastern Shore. There, he fought a five-year legal battle against the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation over substandard units in their Rural and Native Housing Program. Jim later co-founded The Eastern Shore Sandpiper, serving as general editor until 2000.

Jim was also an artist of tattoo, quillwork, sculpture, and ink. For decades, his hand-carved totems stood in Sheet Harbour and outside the Mi'kmaq Craft Shop on Barrington Street in Halifax. In 1982, Jim illustrated A Children’s Storybook for Nova Scotia’s Old Home Summer festival. His unpublished manuscript, Crime in Halifax, captures his passion for history.

Jim is survived by his children, John and Margaret; siblings John, Maxine, and Shauna; and a large circle of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former spouse, Heather MacLean.
