

James “Jim” Purdy Sweet passed away at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax, on March 17, 2018, at the age of 90. Born in Fairville (Lancaster), NB, on June 15, 1927, he was the son of the late Arthur and Edith (Byers) Sweet.
Jim joined the Merchant Navy at an early age during the war years. After the war, he sailed on Imperial Oil tankers for several years. In 1953, he joined the Fundy Gypsum Company, retiring at the rank of Bosun in 1992.
Known to family members as Purdy, he is survived by his nephew, Dan (Angela) Sweet of Pendleton, IN; nieces, Diane (Bill) Orick of Knoxville, TN, Debra (Roger) Murphy of Cookville, TN. Also surviving are cousins, Ian (Margie) Sweet, Rothesay, NB, Kristen Sweet and Ann (Robert) Turcotte of Saint John, NB, and numerous other cousins, great nieces and great nephews. Jim will be missed by good friends, Elsie Fenerty and her family.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother, Doug and nephews, David, Donald and Dale. Jim was a kind and caring person and will be missed by all. Many thanks to the staff of V4 East, Veterans Memorial Hospital for the excellent care Jim received.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A service will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Thursday, April 12, at 1:30 pm with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 585 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
