It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Janet Marie Hughes of St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia. She passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Michael Dunphy, her parents Leo F. Hughes and Mary F. Hughes, and her brother Leo F. Hughes, Jr. She is survived by her Brother Joseph Hughes and his wife Carrie of Topsfield, MA her nephews Joseph Hughes and his wife Allyson of Ipswich, MA their children Violet and Bernie, Daniel Hughes and his wife Connor Rose of Portland, ME, and Leo F. Hughes III of Weymouth, MA as well as her cousins and many friends.
Janet was born in Boston, MA and was raised in Jamaica Plain and Milton, MA. She worked in the healthcare industry for most of her career in both the US and Canada. Janet was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a cousin, a work colleague, a friend and a cherished wife. She enjoyed gatherings of all kinds and was always happy to get together with family, friends and neighbors. She played tennis, skied and golfed but her true passion was sailing. She was living in Boston on her boat in the Constitution Marina when she met her beloved husband Mike. From that day on, they became inseparable and Janet adopted Canada as her home when she moved with him to St. Margarets Bay, NS. Together they owned several boats sailing the shores and seas around Canada with an occasional sail down to the states. They loved fires in the fireplace, testing recipes together, grilling, competing against each other in their nightly games of Scrabble with a cocktail, (usually a vodka tonic). and of course their mutual passion for sailing.
Most of all, Janet loved her family. She especially enjoyed wonderful summers with the family at their cottage in Humarock Beach, MA and the many holiday celebrations with her cousins, aunts and uncles. She loved being the “cool” aunt to her nephews and she was thrilled to become a Great Aunt in recent years.
Janet will be remembered for her love of life, her warm smile, her laugh, her kindness, love of fried clams (with bellies), and her deep love for her husband and family. Remember Janet with a smile on her face, on the boat with Mike where they were happiest, sailing on calm seas with fair winds…
