With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Jean Beverly Matheson (Grant). A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and dear friend to many, Jean touched countless lives with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.
Born on July 24, 1929, in Three Brooks, Pictou County, Jean was the daughter of William and Bessie (Murray) Grant. She passed away on February 17, 2025, in Halifax, NS, at the age of 95.
Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Staff Sgt. A.A. (Gus) Matheson, whom she met while working at the hospital, where he was visiting his landlady. They shared a lifetime of love and adventure. She was also predeceased by her siblings Mabel Grant, Winnie (Forsee), Mary (Watt), Muriel (Miller), and George Grant.
She is survived by her sister Iris Solie (Al) and her daughters Carrie McNair (Tim), Gail MacLeod (Keith), and Pamela Margeson (Robert). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Ainsley Avramenko (Adam) and Braden MacLeod and a cherished great-grandmother to Avery and Adler Jean Avramenko.
Jean graduated from the Halifax Children’s Hospital in 1953, where she formed lifelong friendships. She and her classmates traveled overseas together, shared countless lunches, and remained in close contact throughout the years.
She put her nursing career on hold to focus on her family but later resumed her profession in the 1970s, working at both Glace Bay General Hospital and Northside General Hospital. As the wife of an RCMP officer, Jean moved frequently within Nova Scotia, meeting and forming lasting friendships in each community.
Though she and Gus originally planned to retire in Cape Breton, they relocated to Owen Sound, Ontario, in the late 1980s, where they enjoyed many years surrounded by family and new friends. Jean became an active member of the church, served as an elder, and discovered her passion for quilting, a craft she adored.
In 2012, they returned to Halifax to be closer to family. Jean’s warmth, strength, and generosity will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
