

Joan spent many happy years in Princeton, West Virginia, where she and her husband Roy raised their family, before returning home to Nova Scotia in 1996. She was known for her kindness, compassion, and generous spirit. Joan gave freely of her time, volunteering wherever she was needed. She found joy in gardening, baking, and spending time with her beloved dog, Coco. Above all, she cherished every moment with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and happiness.
Joan is survived by her siblings, Wanda Shaw of Halifax, NS; Wayne (Jill) Rhyno of Halifax, NS; Stephen Rhyno of St. Margaret's Bay, NS; and her sister-in-law, Florence Rhyno of Halifax, NS.
She leaves behind her loving children: Karan Manuel of Chester, NS; Debbie Graves of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; Vicki (Jerry) Nauss of Boutiliers Point, NS; Floyd Graves of Tantallon, NS; Pam (Joe) Pike of Lower Sackville, NS; Robyn Graves of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; and Shawn (Louise) Graves of Edmonton, AB.
She is also survived by her stepchildren: Garnet (Joey) Vicars of South Carolina, USA; Janet (Micky) Thomas of North Carolina, USA; Veronica (Patrick) Broyles of West Virginia, USA; Timmy Brooks of West Virginia, USA; and Pat (Elaine) Brooks of South Carolina, USA.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her 29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren from her blended family, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Margaret Rhyno; her beloved husband, Roy Brooks; her siblings Robert, Teddy, Marion, June, and Pat; her grandson, Jeremy Graves; her son-in-law, Robert Manuel; her sister-in-law, Cathy Rhyno; and her stepdaughter, Sheri Ellen Gallagher.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Northwood Ivany for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided to Joan during her stay.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Thursday July 9, 2026 at 11:00 am, St. James Anglican Church in Boutilier's Point. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
