Born in London, England, she was the daughter of James & Clara Badstevener. Joan met Douglas in London and they were married in the Parish of All Saint’s Camberwell. In 1946, she immigrated as a War Bride to Halifax, and from that time onward, she considered Nova Scotia as her home.
In 1954 Joan and Douglas moved their family to Spryfield and their five children were raised there. She was active in the community, and in particular, Emmanuel Anglican Church. There, Mum enjoyed fellowship and camaraderie by participating in many of the church’s committees, choir, served as the Head of the Sanctuary Guild, The Elf Group, and was a Warden. Always a willing participant in anything involving fun, humour, or a chance to dance, Mum took particular delight in being part of the Dinner Theatre.
Her sewing skills were legendary, and she passed on her skills for making clothes and costumes to her daughters. She loved feeding a crowd and spending time with her family. Visiting with Nanny or Great Nanny always included her home-baked treats.
Joan is survived by her children, Laraine (Michel) Paradis, Janet Schnare, Stuart (Elaine) Schnare, Debra Clowater, Andrew Schnare; grandchildren, Madeleine (Gregory) Marshall, Elizabeth (Reuben Altman) Paradis, Andrew & Peter Schnare, David (Nicole) Clowater, Phillip (Alex) Clowater, Daniel Clowater, Amy & Olivia Schnare; great-grandchildren Rebecca & Lucy Marshall, Desmond & Theodore Altman, & Abigail Clowater; brother James Badstevener, as well as nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Douglas; sister Stella Williams; and son-in-law Kevin Clowater.
The family would like to thank Northwood Ivany Place, and especially the staff on Lupin Hills, and the family members of the other residents for the loving care and affection extended to our mother during her time there.
