BUCKLEY, John W. “Jack”, 75, Halifax, passed away on November 9, 2010 at the Palliative Care Unit, QEII Health Sciences Center. Jack, son of Mary (Monaghan) and Leonard Buckley, born in Halifax, was a graduate of Saint Mary’s University and the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. He was both a teacher and administrator for thirty-five years in colleges and universities in Nova Scotia and Ontario. During those years, he worked and traveled extensively in projects of international education, mainly in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. He was a consultant with the World Bank and led several projects for CIDA and The Association of Canadian Community Colleges. In Ontario and Nova Scotia, Jack served on numerous boards and commissions in community, church, and educational endeavors. He was Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Bureau of International Education and a Director on the Board of Community Colleges for International Education. Jack was elected three times to represent the City of Brampton, Ontario as a trustee on the Dufferin Peel R.C. School Board. Leaving his position of Dean of the School of Business at Humber College, Toronto, he returned to Nova Scotia in 1990 and became the founding President of the Nova Scotia Community College. Through extensive new program development to meet the changing training needs of Nova Scotia’s new economies, the NSCC became a vital partner in post secondary education. His years at NSCC were the most rewarding of his career where his leadership was marked with a quiet dignity and trustfulness. In recognition of his contributions to post secondary education, St. Mary’s University conferred on him an honorary doctorate in 1997. From childhood Jack remained a great fan of Notre Dame football and though tennis was always his favourite sport, he enjoyed for many years boating, golfing, and fishing. Jack is survived by his wife, Marguerite Flinn, and three children: John of Shelburne, ON; Nancy (Thom) Stapleton of Fall River, NS; and Kathy (Darren) Campbell of Newmarket, ON; his sister Nora (David) Connors of Ottawa.
