Friends and family mourn John Denis Goodwin who passed at the Halifax Infirmary on June 26, 2021, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his parents Alice and Arthur Goodwin as well as sisters Dinah, Pat and Colleen.
He leaves behind Caroline, his wife of 35 years, as well as his daughter Susan Goodwin and her daughter Shaye, his brother Brian, brother-in-law Lou Ott, nieces Laurie (Mike) Wafer and family as well as Shannon Morelli and Viktor and his nephew Gordon Ott and his son. Also left to mourn is his extended family that includes Caroline’s four children Margot Spurway, Mike Daley, David Daley and Kim Daley, as well as their spouses, their children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by them all.
Born on May 1, 1938 in Montreal, John’s early education was in the Montreal public school system. He played junior hockey in his early years and later played some golf and tennis. He graduated from Loyola University and spent the early portion of his working life in banking and corporate leasing in Montreal. He then moved to Halifax and opened his own business as a representative of many of Canada’s leading clothing companies. He travelled the Atlantic Provinces extensively for more than 25 years and was well known and liked in the apparel industry.
After retiring from the apparel business, he and Caroline travelled extensively, spending many winters on the Canary Islands and later in Naples, Florida, where one of his favorite chairs was on a balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
John was a born salesman. He always said he had the gift of gab, and anyone who ever met him would agree. He liked people and easily started conversations with anyone about anything just about everywhere he went. He had a keen sense of humour that drew many people into his large cadre of friends and acquaintances. He only needed to be in a new place for a few days before most people knew who he was.
At his request, there will be no viewing or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
