My name is Ian Logan. I did not ever meet Steve, or any of you, so far as I know, except maybe when we were both in the nursery at the Grace Maternity Hospital as newborns on the same day in 1954(?). I read the back page of McLean's last week and was stunned at the coincidences. I was born on the same day, in the same place, and most babies in Halifax were delivered at the "Grace" in those days. My Dad was also a Naval Officer - at the time he was Lcdr. John "Deke" Logan, commanding a flying squadron off the cariers. He is 88 and does not remember details of the day of my birth or who was there at the time. He remembers a "Jack" Dunn, PO, from those days (but not a Korean War veteran, so probably a different guy?) but no Ron Dunn, so maybe they were never acquainted. But I wonder if they stood next to each other at the Grace nursery that day looking at their newborns (?). If my Mom (Joan) were still with us, I have no doubt she would recall one way of the other.
Anyway, I am very sorry for your loss. From all the accounts I have read in this guest book, Steve was definitely hall of fame for our common birthdate, and I feel some kinship. I hope time will heal your sorrow.

Dearest Colleen and Family,

I feel like I know you and your family, yet we have never met. I worked with Steve in Houston for a couple of years and the time we spent together was invaluable.  He talked about you in the highest regard and his family was his top priority.

Looking back on the first time I met Steve, I feel like I was a 28 year old child - knew it all and didn't have patience for anything really. That was only 4 years ago and he led me on a journey of personal growth. I used to talk to him about so many aspects of my life, from a jog in the park, or a problem at work, to the joy of becoming a mother for the first time. 

I learned so much from our time together. Steve pushed me to places I didn't think I could handle and taught me that taking the easy way out is not an option. He also taught that whatever you do in life, understand why you are doing it and carry it out with conviction. 

Steve was truly a special man who influenced so many people. I am going to miss our banter and his wit. He was such a big personality and the world lost a great man.

He gave so much of himself to others and the amazing part of this is I know I am not alone; this was all-in-a-day's work for him. He impacted people everywhere he went. 

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I can't begin to understand how your family must be feeling but know that you have “strangers” in Houston who are thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. Thank you for sharing him with us in Texas and I offer my deepest sympathies.

Hi Colleen.  I am so sorry that your world has turned so tragically.  David and I are travelling and heard this news from a distance.  I didn't know Steve very well, but I have always known that you deserved "the best" and I'm thinking that you did indeed get that!  I wish there was something I could do or say to Help...but that's unlikely, at least right now.  But I do hope that as you start to fill the holes and put the pieces together...we can spend one great afternoon together.  I have admired you for so long Colleen...and you deserve a strong, healthy and peaceful life...and I have to believe that life will look that way again for you someday.  Living life just gets hard to do sometimes.  It really isn't fair and makes no sence.  I am so sorry for your pain.  After we lost Susan, my favourite card said this:  "Those that we love deeply become a part of us".  I believe that to be true...I'm sure you will as well. Dear Colleen and family,

It is evident that I am not alone in my thoughts about Steve; as expected there is a common theme among all that knew him.  I met Steve when he came to work with us at ICON just as my beloved brother-in-law was dying of cancer.  While he allowed me my grief he was also determined to fill my half empty cup.  Steve's love for life was infectious and his loyalty to his family fierce.   He obviously loved you deeply.

When Steve was in town he always made it a point to stop by my office and ask about my husband, Rey, and my son, Jake.  When I told Jake, who is 9, of Steve's passing he became quite and teary.  After a few minutes he said, "I liked Mr. Steve.  He was nice and he was really funny." He was both of those things and so much more.  

I can't count how many times during his "lessons" at ICON that he said, with a big grin on his face, "isn't this great?" and I remember thinking "Steve's right, that is pretty great" and wondered how he managed that.  Great people are able to influence the people around them and Steve was among the greats.  

It is a true privilege to have met a man who possessed such amazing qualities; qualities that were clearly innate in Steve.  He was the real deal.  Thank you for sharing your Steve with us.  We are all better off having known him.

Edel and I would like to share our condolences at Steve's passing. I first got to know Steve when he came to work with us at ICON in Houston in 2008. At the time Edel was still living back home in Ireland and I was alone in Houston. Steve took me under his wing, got me out running again, and kept me sane in the months before Edel joined me in the US. Over the next years we both came to know an exceptional man. Steve was to us, in Edel's words, "everyone's favourite Canadian" and ours. I don't think we have ever met a more giving and thoughtful person; a man with a mischievous sense of humour and a genuine love for life and people. For myself I learnt so much from him on how I could contribute more in my professional life, but also about being a better father and friend. We have many treasured memories from our times with Steve (as well as a house-warming gift that he gave us of a rose bush flowering in our front yard, that we call Steve!); thank you all for supporting him through all those many months he spent in Houston and giving us the chance to know him.

To the Family of Steve Dunn,
Steve and I were friends during our university days and although I had not been in touch with him for over thirty years, I was saddened to hear of his passing.  My sincere condolences to you all.  R.I.P.  Steve.

I worked with Steve at Air Liquide - he was my very first boss but also became a good friend.  He left a strong impression on me, in his management style, sense of fun and comraderie and his leadership both at work and while running. He was there when I ran my first race, at Cabot Trail in the mid '90s.  Since moving to Ontario in 2000 I had lost touch but will always remember him.  I am very sorry for your loss.  My thoughts are with you all today.

To the Family of Steve,
I've had the pleasure - no - the privilage to meet Steve in 2006 and work with him while he had a consulting contract with the then Nova Scotia Central for Credit Unions. Following that meeting I had gotten to know Steve rather well and he became to me not only a friend but a tutor, a mentor as well as a great tormentor (I mean that with the sincerest of feelings). We loved to try and get one up on each other. Steve was rarely with out a smile and a word of positive support. For him the glass was always half full - always positive especially when things seemed particually tough. He genuinely cared about people and wanted to help any one he could. For me - I was beyond help - but the big guy (tall) took me under his wing all the same. We shared some interesting games of chess both in office and on line - none were ever completed - I always seemed to get an upper hand and then something mysterious would happen to our game - oh that Stevie D -.  He created a small group of ruffians affectionately entitled OBYFer's that would meet occassionally to raise a glass of cheer and share what was going on in our lives - We will contiue to do this occassionally and will always raise a glass to Steve. I am sure he will be greatly missed by the family having left this world far too soon and I would like to let the family know that he had a reach into to many other lives  - and he was not just someone who passed through - he left something behind to help us all be better than we were the day before.  Thank you Steve, we will miss you! Sincere Condolances to the family at this time of real loss our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

I knew Steve socially through mutual acquaintances and the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him was his smile and the look on his face like he was trying to think of something interesting or relevant to say to engage you in a conversation.   I met Steve thru my wife, Sylvie and her co-workers at Icon Clinical here in Houston and quickly knew how much of a great person he was. I had the good fortune to know Steve through his work at VON. His contribution was outstanding and consistent with the level of passion and skill he brought to everything he did. I am also a runner and had a few runs with Steve when he would regale me with terrific stories and insights. Those stories were in between talk of family which was the most treasured part of his life. To say he will be missed barely scratches the surface. Our world is a better place because of Steve and I share in the profound sadness of his loss.
